The change in design for the new version of a great product has resulted in an inferior product. The lead breaks easily and the image is too light. The old design was superior. Why was it changed?

Hi Angelo, Thanks for sharing your feedback—it’s completely valid. The Paper Mate SharpWriter Mechanical Pencil was updated to improve affordability and reduce material waste while maintaining its disposable, twist-feed design. The core function—delivering a quick, budget-friendly writing option—remains the same, but the feel has changed. If you prefer a more durable mechanical pencil with darker output and stronger lead, Paper Mate’s Clearpoint line or other 0.7 mm pencils with stronger grip and lead support might be a better match. How do you reload a new lead into the C1 0.5mm mechanical pencil? I can't see any bits that unscrew to put new lead into internal tube

Hi Penden, Thanks for your question. The Paper Mate SharpWriter isn’t a refillable mechanical pencil—unlike standard mechanical pencils, it’s designed as a disposable twist-feed pencil. It uses a spring-like tip that advances the lead when you twist the eraser end, but it can’t be opened or reloaded with new lead. If you're asking about reloading the C1 0.5mm mechanical pencil, that’s a different model—not the SharpWriter. For typical refillable 0.5mm pencils, here’s how you usually reload them: 1. Pull off the eraser or top cap. 2. Drop 1–3 new 0.5mm HB leads into the inner tube. 3. Replace the eraser or cap. 4. Click to advance the lead. If your specific C1 model has a unique mechanism and you're not seeing how it opens, feel free to share the photo—some minimalist designs hide the refill point in unusual ways. For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-346-3278. Our support team is available Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Time.
