History of Paper Mate
Early in the 1940's a gentleman by the name of Patrick J. Frawley acquired his first company — a ballpoint pen parts manufacturer that defaulted on its loan.
1949 | Paper Mate Pen Created
The pen industry witnessed a major technological breakthrough. The Frawley Pen Company developed a revolutionary new ink, which dried instantly. The pen that delivered this ink was called the Paper Mate.
1953 | Advertising
The Frawley Pen Company announced an advertising budget of $2 million — the biggest in pen history. Advertising campaigns used famous celebrities including George Burns, Gracie Allen and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
1955 | Gillette Acquires Paper Mate
The Gillette Company acquires the Frawley Pen Company for $15.5 million and the Paper Mate Division at Gillette was born.
1957 | Santa Monica Plant Opens
A new $1.5 million manufacturing plant opens in Santa Monica where manufacturing continues today.
1966 | Flair Pen Introduced
Diversification in other areas of writing instruments began in 1966 with the introduction of Flair with its porous point (later known as Tempo and now Nylon).
1969 | Write At Any Angle
1969 saw the introduction of the famous Powerpoint refill, synonymous with the 'pumping hearts' symbol. This refill would write at any angle - even upside down.
1971 | Write Bros.
In 1971, Paper Mate launches a major new product line called "Write Bros." Santa Monica produces about 600 million per year.
1979 | Erasable Ink Arrives
The result of more than a decade of research, the Erasermate (Replay) pen is launched in the US. Due to the formula required for erasability, the ink flow is pressurized allowing writing at any angle.
1980 | Stationery Products Group
Gillette acquires Liquid Paper and Waterman. With these acquisitions, the Paper Mate Division was changed to the Stationery Products Group.
1984 | Disposable, Mechanical Pencils
Launched for Back to School the Sharpwriter (Non-Stop Pencil) was a value for money, disposable, mechanical pencil that never needed sharpening.
1987 | Rubberized Barrel Pens Arrive
Flexgrip launched as one of the first rubberized barrel pens in the market, which it dominated until the early 1990's.
1993 | Gillette Acquires Competitor
Gillette acquired the Parker Pen Company. It was then that one of our biggest competitors became a member of the Gillette family, positioning Gillette as the largest manufacturer of writing instruments in the world.
1994 | Lubriglide Refill
An all-new Paper Mate ball pen refill is launched. Lubriglide, with its lubricated ink glide system, delivered bold, vivid lines without blobbing or skipping.
1996 | Flexgrip Ultra
The redesigned Flexgrip relaunched as Flexgrip Ultra, with a new stylish appearance, Lubriglide Ink System, wider barrel with gripping rings and rubberized texture.
2000 | Newell Rubbermaid
Gillette's Stationery Products Division is aquired by Newell Rubbermaid.
2001 | Supersmooth Ink
Paper Mate launched the first pen with Supersmooth ink, which is an advanced ink technology that combines the smoothness of a rollerball with the functionality of a ballpen.
2002 | Paper Mate's Future
Down the road in 2002, Paper Mate will launch several innovative new products, a refreshed Paper Mate logo, and new packaging for all products.
